Working together to strengthen mental health on Curaçao
On 1 May, Labour Day, the kick-off of Green Recovery Space took place. During this gathering, general practitioners, occupational physicians, social workers, mental health professionals, and government representatives came together around one shared ambition: strengthening mental health support on Curaçao.
Throughout the meeting, an open dialogue emerged about how people who are mentally struggling can be supported in a better and more accessible way.
Central to the conversation was the role of Green Recovery Space as a low-threshold physical place where people can catch their breath, participate in activities and trainings, and receive support from trained peer experts.
Director Zaira Barriento spoke about the origins and development of Green Recovery Space. With support from ZonMw and in collaboration with Windesheim University of Applied Sciences, 24 peer experts have already been trained.
Lecturer Alie Weerman explained the scientific foundation behind the recovery-oriented approach. In addition, three peer experts shared their personal recovery stories during the event.
The atmosphere of the gathering was characterized by openness, collaboration, and involvement. The conversations highlighted the importance of creating spaces where people can regain a sense of direction, connection, and hope.
One of the peer experts described the initiative as:
“What is being created here is a place that helps people regain control and catch their breath again. We hope this will also help relieve pressure on the healthcare system.”
The successful kick-off marks an important next step in the realization of Green Recovery Space and the broader movement toward recovery-oriented mental health support in Curaçao and the Caribbean region.
